Job description
ROLE PURPOSE:
Advanced Energy Malaysia is seeking a highly experienced Principal Power Semiconductor Device Engineer to serve as the technical authority for power semiconductor component failure analysis, root cause corrective action (RCCA), and reliability investigations across all Advanced Energy business units.
This role is responsible for leading complex investigations involving power semiconductor failures occurring in power supplies deployed in customer applications and manufacturing environments. The individual will interface closely with Customer Quality Engineering (CQE), Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE), Component Failure Analysis (CFA), Product Engineering, Design Engineering, Reliability Engineering, and Manufacturing teams to identify, validate, and eliminate root causes of semiconductor-related failures.
The Principal Engineer will provide deep technical expertise in silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN) power semiconductor technologies, leveraging advanced device physics knowledge, failure analysis techniques, and stress-testing methodologies to determine failure mechanisms and drive effective corrective and preventive actions.
This position serves as the primary technical liaison between Advanced Energy, semiconductor suppliers, and electronics manufacturing partners for critical power semiconductor quality and reliability issues.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Principal Power Semiconduct Device Engineer serves as a technical authority for power semiconductor failure analysis, root cause corrective action (RCCA) and reliability investigations across Advanced Energy.
The role leads complex investigations involving Si, SiC and GaN power semiconductor devices, applying device physics, failure analysis and reliability methodoligies to identify root causes and drive effective corrective and preventive actions. The position works closely with Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing and suppliers to resolve critical semiconductor-related issues and improve product quality and reliability.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Power Semiconductor Failure Analysis and Reliability.
• Lead complex failure investigations and RCCA activities involving power semiconductor devices, including Si, SiC, GaN, MOSFETs, IGBTs, diodes and power modules.
• Analyze and validate semiconductor failure mechanisms using device physics, electrical and thermal characterization, laboratory evidence and failure analysis results.
• Develop and execute appropriate stress-testing and failure-replication methodologies to reproduce field and manufacturing failures and validate root-cause hypotheses.
• Assess semiconductor reliability risks and interpret qualification and reliability test results to support device, technology and supplier qualification.
• Evaluate semiconductor failures in power supply applications and recommend design, derating or reliability improvements to prevent recurrence.
Technical Leadership & Correction Action
• Lead RCCA, 8D, CAR and CAPA activities for semiconductor-related field returns, customer complaints and manufacturing failures, ensuring effective containment and corrective/preventive actions.
• Serve as the technical interface with customers on field failures and product quality issues related to MOSFET component failures.
• Serve as the technical focal point for semiconductor-related issues across Customer Quality, Supplier Quality, Component Failure Analysis, Product/Design Engineering, Reliability Engineering and Manufacturing.
• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to engineering teams on semiconductor device physics, failure mechanisms, failure analysis and root-cause investigation methodologies.
Supplier & Cross-Functional Support
• Partner with semiconductor suppliers and manufacturing partners to resolve component quality and reliability issues, review failure analysis findings and drive corrective actions.
• Support semiconductor technology and supplier qualification, including assessment of fabrication, packaging, assembly and test processes and their impact on product reliability.
• Present technical findings, conclusions and recommendations to management, customers, suppliers and cross-functional teams, and drive closure of critical quality and reliability issues.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and perform other duties as assigned.
• Adhere to organizational requirements on quality management, health and safety, code of conduct, legal stipulations, environmental, 5S policies and general duty of care.
• Support other functions as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
• Location: Penang Science Park, Simpang Ampat Penang.
• Travel may be required to support suppliers, customers and other Advanced Energy locations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Deep knowledge of power semiconductor device physics, technologies and failure mechanisms, including Si, SiC and GaN devices.
• Strong expertise in semiconductor failure analysis, electrical/thermal characterization, device stress testing and reliability methodologies.
• Strong understanding of semiconductor fabrication, wafer manufacturing, packaging and assembly processes.
• Knowledge of power semiconductor packaging technologies, including wire-bond, copper-clip, molded packages and power modules.
• Strong understanding of power electronics applications, converter topologies, device derating and reliability considerations.
• Working knowledge of structured quality and problem-solving methodologies such as 8D, RCCA, CAR, CAPA and FMEA.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving capability with the ability to lead complex technical investigations across multiple functions.
• Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical findings to engineering teams, management, customers and suppliers.
EXPERIENCE:
Essential:
• Minimum 15 years of relevant experience in power semiconductor device engineering, failure analysis, reliability engineering, product engineering or semiconductor test engineering.
• Extensive hands-on experience with Si, SiC and/or GaN power semiconductor technologies and semiconductor failure analysis.
• Proven experience leading complex failure investigations and root cause corrective actions.
• Experience supporting field failures, customer quality issues and supplier corrective actions.
• Experience working with semiconductor manufacturers, suppliers and/or electronics OEMs.
• Demonstrated ability to lead complex cross-functional technical problem solving in a global environment.
Desirable:
• Experience supporting global manufacturing operations and qualification of new semiconductor technologies or suppliers.
• Experience with advanced semiconductor FA techniques such as SEM, FIB, EDX, SAM, X-ray, decapsulation, curve tracing and emission microscopy.
• Experience in customer-facing quality and reliability investigations.
• Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
EDUCATION:
Essential:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline.
Desirable:
• Master’s Degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
