How to use your job search spreadsheet
- Download and open the file in Excel. Save your own copy and look at the Example tab for a quick walkthrough.
- Add opportunities to the Applications tab. Keep one company and role per row. Paste the original job link so you can find the description again.
- Choose a status and a next action. Use Saved, Applied, Interview, Offer, Accepted, Rejected, or Withdrawn. Enter dates as Excel dates.
- Review your follow-ups regularly. Amber dates show open opportunities due for attention. Update or clear a follow-up date after you act.
Frequently asked questions
Is the job search tracker really free?
Yes. Download the Excel file directly, without creating an account, entering your email, or buying a subscription.
What is included in the download?
An Applications sheet with space for 200 opportunities and an Example sheet with three fictional applications. Both include filters, status dropdowns, a total opportunity count, and a count of follow-ups due.
How do follow-up reminders work?
Enter a date in Follow-up on. When Excel recalculates, dates due today or earlier turn amber. Accepted, rejected, and withdrawn applications are excluded. The spreadsheet does not send notifications or emails.
Can I use this in Google Sheets?
The download is an Excel (.xlsx) file. You can import it into Google Sheets, but formatting and spreadsheet features may behave differently. This template is designed for Excel.
Where is my application data stored?
You enter your information in your own copy of the spreadsheet. The template does not send your entries to FindYourCareer. If you save it to a cloud drive, that service handles storage and sharing.
