How to calculate overtime pay
Overtime rate = regular hourly rate × multiplier. With time and a half the multiplier is 1.5, with double time it is 2. Overtime pay = overtime hours × overtime rate.
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, overtime starts after 40 hours in a workweek. A week of 50 hours at 20 an hour is 40 × 20 = 800 regular pay plus 10 × 30 = 300 overtime pay, for 1,100 in total.
The average pay per hour shows what every hour worked earned you that week, overtime included. It is a quick way to compare a week with overtime to a job that pays more per hour.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate overtime pay?
Multiply your regular hourly rate by the overtime multiplier, usually 1.5, to get your overtime rate. Then multiply that rate by the hours you worked past 40 in the week. At 20 an hour and 50 hours worked, overtime pay is 10 × 30 = 300, and the week's gross pay is 800 + 300 = 1,100.
What is time and a half?
Time and a half is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate. If you earn 20 an hour, time and a half is 30 an hour. It is the standard overtime rate under the US Fair Labor Standards Act for hours worked past 40 in a workweek.
What is double time?
Double time is twice your regular hourly rate. Federal law doesn't require it, but some states, union contracts and employers pay it for long days, holidays or a seventh day of work in a row.
Who gets overtime pay?
In the US, employees classified as non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act must get at least time and a half for hours past 40 in a workweek. Many salaried employees in executive, administrative or professional roles are exempt. Some states have stricter rules, so check your state's labor department.
How does overtime work in California?
California counts overtime per day as well as per week: time and a half after 8 hours in a day or 40 in a week, and double time after 12 hours in a day. Extra rules apply to the seventh consecutive workday. This calculator counts overtime per week, so a California week with long days can pay more than it shows.
Is overtime taxed more?
Overtime is taxed as ordinary income, at the same rates as the rest of your pay. A paycheck with overtime can show more tax withheld because the larger amount is treated as if you earned it every pay period; any excess comes back when you file your return.
Is the calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and doesn't store what you enter.
