How a salary increase is calculated

New pay = current pay × (1 + raise ÷ 100). A 4% raise on a salary of 60,000 gives 62,400, which is 2,400 more a year, 200 more a month and about 1.15 more an hour at 40 hours a week.

To find the raise percentage between two salaries, use (new pay − current pay) ÷ current pay × 100. A move from 50,000 to 55,000 is a 10% salary increase.

The real raise compares your raise with inflation: (1 + raise) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1. If prices rise faster than your pay, the result is negative and your raise is in fact a pay cut in buying power.

All amounts are gross. To compare pay across schedules, use the salary to hourly calculator. Weighing a raise against an offer from another employer? Put them side by side in the job offer comparison template.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a pay raise?

Multiply your current pay by the raise percentage and add it to your pay. A 5% raise on 60,000 is 60,000 × 0.05 = 3,000, so your new salary is 63,000. For an hourly wage it works the same way: a 5% raise on 25.00 an hour is 26.25.

How do I calculate the percentage of a salary increase?

Subtract your old pay from your new pay, divide by your old pay and multiply by 100. Going from 50,000 to 55,000 is (55,000 − 50,000) ÷ 50,000 × 100 = 10%. Choose New pay in the calculator to get this number straight away.

What is a good raise?

In the US, typical annual merit raises have been around 3% to 4% in recent years. A raise below the inflation rate means your pay buys less than before, even though the number went up. Raises from a promotion or a new job are usually larger, often 10% or more.

What is a real raise?

It is your raise after inflation. If your pay goes up 4% while prices rise 3%, your real raise is about 1%. The calculator uses (1 + raise) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1, so a raise equal to inflation shows a real raise of 0%.

Is the result before or after tax?

Before tax. The calculator works with gross pay. Your take-home increase will be smaller because of income tax, social security and other deductions, which depend on where you live.

Can I use it for an hourly wage?

Yes. Set the pay period to Hourly and enter your rate. Hours per week and paid weeks per year turn it into weekly, monthly and annual pay, so you can also see what a raise of a dollar an hour adds up to over a year.

Is the calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and doesn't store what you enter.
